Acing the Interview

On March 9th, Career Services of Georgia Southern University held their annual Acing the Interview Workshop. The event was held in the university Russell Union building in room 2047 and began at 5:30 p.m. Hosted by Rachel Barrett, a Career Services staff employee, the workshop introduced several tips for resume critiques, interview success, personal accounts and potential questions for an interview.

The first thing Mrs. Barrett discussed were resumes. She explained that resumes should be “dynamite”, should not contain any typographical errors and should focus on tasks rather than skills. She encouraged students to get involved within the university and join leadership positions because such items can be included on a resume. According to Mrs. Barrett employers take approximately 15 to 30 seconds to scan an individual resume before they evaluate the possibility of discarding it. With this in mind, it is important to create a unique resume that stands out from other job seekers. It is important to be honest while also taking a different approach and grab the employers attention. In a resume be sure to include the objective, education, leadership and work experience, project experience, relevant courses, skills, honors/awards and any volunteer experience.

Another aspect of the workshop included the tips for having a successful interview. To prepare for an upcoming interview Mrs. Barrett suggested visiting the Office of Career Services to have a Mock Interview conducted by the office staff. It was emphasized that students should use the same language as the employer. Terms and vocabulary should represent the field of interest and the position being applied for. She also recommended researching the company for which you apply. An important point Mrs. Barrett explained was that recruiters often ask students to do more research regarding the company they have interest in and read articles that relate to the company and its employees. She discussed that completing the research of the company and the position shows preparation that employers like and prefer. It is also imperative to know yourself. This means that you should have knowledge in your skills and abilities and be able to verbalize what you have accomplished and why it is important. Essentially, when speaking with an employer utilize transferable skills which include managerial, organizational and analytical roles and special skills which consist of bilingual and computer literacy.

A crucial point of the workshop targeted the proper etiquette of an interview. Although it may seem like common sense, it is paramount to not only act the part, but also dress the part. Mrs. Barrett’s personal opinion was that the interview experience begins as soon as you leave your house. She mentioned that interviewees should maintain a clean vehicle and they should watch their actions and non verbal communication on the way to the interview. She explained an instance that occurred with Enterprise where a potential candidate was observed getting dressed for the interview in their car in the parking lot of Enterprise. Unfortunately Enterprise is comprised of large glass windows and everyone caught a peek of the lady getting dressed. To avoid such instances, she suggested that applicants be completely prepared before leaving their house. She also mentioned to be dressed professionally when dropping off an application and also during the actual interview. During the interview Mrs. Barrett emphasized turning off cell phones, not chewing gum, limiting cologne/perfume and dressing conservatively. At the conclusion of the interview be sure to ask for clarification for anything you are confused about, make eye contact, thank the interviewer for their time and give a firm handshake.

Although I was the only student present to the workshop, I found Mrs. Barrett’s tips to be very helpful when preparing for an interview. I found me being the only audience member a benefit because I was able to have a one on one conversation with Mrs. Barrett rather than the standard lecture. She kept my interest with personal accounts of horror stories and successful interviews that I found quite entertaining. However, during our conversation it was apparent that GSU should place more emphasis on advertising the workshops to provide information to more students. The location seemed to be a problem for the event because it was separate from the normal flow of student traffic. The time of the event also proposes a problem for students who take a full load of classes and are eager to go home because the event was held in the evening. For future workshops it would be important for the university to advertise on the GSU homepage, send out e-mail notifications to students and distribute fliers or provide incentives for attendance so that the Office of Career Services can reach their maximum potential audience of students and have the ability to learn as I did.

For the informational interview assignment I chose to interview a co-worker of mine. Allison Glisson is a Public Relation’s Practitioner for Branch Banking & Trust (BB&T). She graduated from Georgia Southern University with a degree in Business. After graduating she landed a position with BB&T assisting the Financial Center Leader. After working three years at BB&T she quickly advanced to her current position as Relationship Banker. Allison is very outgoing and involved within the community and continuously volunteers for various events. I met Allison almost two years ago when I began working for BB&T as a teller. I decided to interview Allison through a face to face interview because she is very approachable and easy to talk with.

Pictured Above: Allison Glisson, BB&T

According to Allison, writing is very important in her field. She explained how she is always designing fliers and brochures and constantly sending out thank you cards or memorandums for different events. “There isn’t a day that goes by where I don’t have to write” said Allison

Although Allison takes pride in all that she does one particular project she is most proud of is the Annual Kickball Tournament she assists with. “I love participating in events for the community. It’s always nice to see everyone and talk with them. It also gets you out of the office and gives you a chance to enjoy having fun with everyone.” she said.

For Allison, every week is different. She handles customer complaints, helps to publicize a positive image for BB&T and promote new business by visiting other organizations and conducting business calls. She also helps to establish new relationships and maintain relationships with current clients to ensure their perfect client experience and satisfaction with BB&T. She is also responsible for connecting with the media and completing press releases when needed.

What surprises her the most is the close-knit relationships she has developed within the community. “I never thought I would meet and get to know so many people. That has been the most rewarding part of my job.” said Allison. She explained how good it feels to walk through town and have so many people know you by name and knowing the impact you have made in their lives by helping them the best way you can. “People are very kind and appreciative for anything you can do and if you can give them a good experience they will continue to come back and ask for your help.” she continued.

Another important factor for Allison is the technology she uses for her job. She seems to live on the computer and always on the phone contacting clients. She also takes use of the fax machine and copier to duplicate and sent out information such as brochures and event materials. It doesn’t seem possible to complete all of her duties without the luxury of technology. She also sends several e-mails a day and occasionally uses snail mail.

After speaking with Allison about her role in the career field I look forward to graduating! I am eager to join my fellow PR Practitioners in the real world and make a difference. I hope that I find my position as rewarding and positive as she does.

According to About.com internships are work-related experiences where students learn professionalism and gain important work knowledge and skills that are important to their field of interest. Internships are highly encouraged for college students to gain hands on experience and acquire expertise for their major.

An important tool in searching for internships is called prospecting where students can contact an employer for available internship opportunities and also have the chance to ask questions regarding what they will learn from the company. Some internships take assistant roles where they support administration with different day-to-day tasks. Other students are fortunate to earn actual operational experience and take on leadership roles where they have the ability to oversee and implement various projects for the organization. Along with prospecting, students are also encouraged to use social networking site and search engines to find valuable internship connections. Most companies have internship information available online under the careers section of their website.

Another important aspect of an internship is to decide if you need a paid internship. Some students are luckily enough to receive paid internships such as The Disney College Program which allows students to receive monetary compensation while learning transferable skills, educational opportunities, professional experience, employee discounts and meeting new people. Other internships include those that maybe unpaid but receiving college credit for the hours spent at the organization achieving beneficial experience that is not found in a traditional classroom setting. Some students, those who still live at home or are financially supported by their parents, are able to maximize their potential with an unpaid internship. Other working students may not be able to afford just college credits alone. It is important to recognize your individual need and take the step in the direction that best suits you.

If you are having a hard time deciding whether you should intern or not, take a look at your financial situation to see what you can afford, talk with your parents and ask how they can help and also speak with your counselors and university instructors for feedback. You never know who maybe able to help and what connections they may have!

When you finally get the chance to be interviewed for your dream position you want everything to be perfect. Including the outfit you’re wearing. Often times we are unsure what to wear or how dressy we should be. This blog will provide tips on what to wear to an interview and what not to wear.

Most of the time it depends on what type of environment where you will be working. Take note of what other employees are wearing when applying for the job or dropping off your resume. Although it is preferred to be overdressed than under dressed you don’t want to be extreme. The following lists are what I have found to be the most appropriate for men and women to wear during their interview.

       Men:

Solid colored suits- navy or grey

Long sleeved shirt

Belt

Tie

Dark socks that match the suit

Neat hairstyle and facial grooming

Little to no jewelry

      Women

Suits- navy, black or dark grey

If ladies wear a skirt they should be able to sit comfortably

Appropriate matching blouse

Coordinating shoes with a small heel

Limited jewelry- keep it simple!

Neutral pantyhose

Good grooming habits

Neatly manicured nails

For both men and women, make sure your cologne/perfume is light. Also make a habit to bring a professional looking portfolio or briefcase in hand to show off your talents.

..What Not to Have..

Cell Phone

Gum

Purse

Drinks

Ipod or other electronic devices

Other tips include: be sure to cover any tattoos or piercings, make sure your clothing fits comfortably before your interview, clean your shoes or have them polished, and for added security pop in a breath mint before you walk into the building.

You can always look nice without having to spend a lot of money. If you don’t have a good business suit you should consider buying one. 55% of someone’s perception of you is based on your appearance, according to Kim Zoller at Image Dynamics. With such a high percentage lets make sure that representation of ourselves is portrayed positively.

If you have a provocative profile picture for your Facebook account or tend to display your personal life through social networking sites, you may want to think twice about doing so. Over the last few years social networking has become a large trend to people everywhere. It has become so popular that even employers have began to use them to their advantage. If you’re looking to hire a new employee and want to know their real interests, why not check their reputation online? In other words, you definitely don’t want to get caught having an unprofessional representation online. For this blog I will explain the benefits and pitfalls of social media in the job search.

Social media lends a helping hand in many ways. You can have a job interview in your own home using Skype, connect with employers and network and also find that dream job through several social media sites. You can use it to benefit yourself if you use it correctly. First, you may want to clean up that Facebook/MySpace profile. Display only appropriate pictures that are suitable for all viewers. For a casual tip, don’t post it if you wouldn’t want your mom seeing it. Also remember to take off those embarrassing comments or improper quotes. Try to limit your profile to display things that show you in a positive light. During those online interviews remember to dress appropriately and remove any underwear or tasteless background items. You may want to reposition your computer and double-check the images that will be visible. Also remember to type correctly and use appropriate punctuation when communicating to employers online.

With the good comes the bad. Although social media can be great with its convenience it can also hurt your good name in an instant. For example, let’s say you get an opportunity to have an interview for your dream job position. You’re completely confident and excited and feel as though you have excelled the interview, you’re just waiting to get the final word. Then you get a phone call from the employer saying that you did not get the position because they accessed your profile online and feel as though the image you represented was not one they would like associated with their company. Sound unfair? Maybe. You may think this is a violation to your privacy but they have the right to see it if you’ve posted it. Most companies are able to go past the private settings of your profile. To avoid that situation let’s just go ahead and keep it clean. We are adults entering the work force so let’s act like it!

In conclusion remember to always act appropriately, in public and online. You never know who’s watching and when your job may depend on it. The world is changing and people can pull up almost anything online now. Just remember to display the same grace and good conduct that you would present in an interview everywhere you go. If you’re the same you all the time you can’t go wrong!

Hello! On this page I will be discussing topics that pertain to my Senior Seminar class and ideas that arise in our everyday lives.

# 1 January 26, 2010

Today in class we discussed the fact that “theory” has come a long way in PR. Years ago theory was not considered a big part of Public Relations but through time it has more than doubled in its scholarship of PR. Many practitioners cannot recall the theories by name but find daily use in them during their career. A few of the theories we have looked at are Cognitive Dissonance, Two-Step Flow, Situation Theory, Diffusion Theory, Public Affairs and Agenda Setting Theory. In the coming weeks we will discover the significance of these and how important they are to a PR practitioner. Hopefully we will be the few who can later recall these theories by name!

#2 February 6, 2010

This morning I was reading an article on culture. I found it interesting because it provided tips on what is appropriate for different countries and how individuals interact within their culture. For instance, in the U.S. we are pretty down to earth and normally go on a first name basis in our relationships. We shake hands or even hug during introductions whereas in Japan it would be more appropriate to bow. What I found particularly neat and relevant to PR is that Wal-Mart went against its normal strategy for its German stores after talking to a PR expert. In most countries when you walk into Wal-Mart there is someone to greet you and welcome you to the store. However, in Germany Wal-Mart does not hire greeters for the certain fact that Germans are uncomfortable with being greeted at the door. Just think, if Wal-Mart hadn’t researched the country and performed a culture evaluation they would’ve lost the business of Germans! Way to go

#3 February 11, 2010

For the first time in class, I watched the show Kell on Earth. Wow! It was unbelievable to see the PR interns making such major mistakes. They created gift bags for their client that were handwritten, no professional labels, no tissue paper and just threw the gifts in the bag. When dealing with large million dollar companies you definitely have to create a better style and presentation. When you represent a client it is important that you always show them how you can benefit them and what you can do for them that someone else can’t. You have to pride yourself on the little things as well as the bigger picture. Just remember in every situation, a little common sense goes a long way!

#4 February 15, 2010

For my Senior Seminar class we are to read a novel called Airframe by Michael Crighton. The novel deals with an investigation of an airplane that reported experiencing severe turbulence during its flight. The PR director of the company that creates the airplanes is Casey, she receives threatening comments and harassing phone calls while working on the investigation. Although it is speculated that the flight went through turbulence, the makers of the airplane and several mechanics blame the injuries and 3 deaths on pilot error. Casey has the difficultly in creating a peaceful work environment and ensuring an accurate review of the investigation while keeping reporters off her back.

#5 February 18, 2010

Another PR related aspect of Airframe is when Casey is asked to do the press package for the N-22. Marder suggests Casey create a press package that includes service hours, safety records, and dispatch data to show the planes admirable history of flights and the reliability of the plane. Marder asks Casey to gather the information instead of Benson, the normal PR practitioner, because he is not good with the media. Benson has a tendency to get argumentative and obnoxious on camera when dealing with the media. So for this particular incident Marder gives the opportunity to Casey because he knows that she is capable of handling pressure while staying calm.

#6 February 23, 2010

So I have to say I really enjoyed reading Airframe afterall. It was interesting to see the way the book changed and how Casey herself became more in control of what was happening in the investigation. It was funny how it all played out while Marder and Richman tried to play her as a fool all along, despite their constant need of “trying to help” and seeming to watch out for her and the company. Casey did a great job during the Newsline interview where she discussed having a flight test the following morning to give reporters and the media a first hand experience of what happened on flight 545.

#7 March 11, 2010

What is ethics? We discussed that ethics includes what each individual considers to be morally right or wrong and what your gut tells you during decision making. It is important as a PR practitioner to keep the public informed and the way an image will be portrayed through the eyes of the public. Although lawyers tend to limit comments and speak from the financial and legality aspects PR practitioners realize the importance of the public and the critical role they play in businesses and cases worldwide and can use that to their advantage if they communicate their messages effectively.

# 8 March 23, 2010

Public Relations entails many aspects of the career field. Practitioners facilitate communication to various organizations and its publics. They have to uphold an image that is portrayed positively and take on their guard at all times. Representing an organization includes establishing and maintaining relationships, being the voice for an organization and accurately representing values and interests to the public. The position is an important one and holds vital tools to resolve conflict. When communicating effectively we have the ability to can change a crisis situation into a learning experience.

#9 April 15, 2010

We had an assignment for class where we got to do a shadow project for someone in the communication’s field. I decided to do my interview with Allison Glisson who is a Relationship Banker at BB&T. Allison was able to provide in depth information about her job and the duties it entails. She explained to me how important communication is and how it is involved everyday with her job. It was interesting to see what she has to do on a typical business day, I had no idea how busy she was! I was glad I got to meet with her and learn more about her title, I enjoyed the interview experience!

#10 April 20, 2010

As the semester is winding down, our class is focusing on our final paper. (hallelujah!) With everything I’ve learned this semester I can’t imagine what the world would be like if we didn’t have jobs for those interested in communications. I am amazed at what a PR does and the knowledge they possess. PR practitioners seem to be the “backbone” to an organization and are always ready to take the heat or stand up against the crowd. I am so excited to enter the “real world” as some call it. I can’t wait to plunge right into the PR workforce.

We’ve all heard the old saying, “It’s not what you say but how you say it.” Although the words we speak express what we think, so do our body language and non verbals. According to Helpguide.org the majority of human communication is non verbal. This is a scary thought! Just imagine how many rolls of the eye, sighs and looks of disgust we have publicized! I know that on more than one occasion I have caught myself doing something or looking at someone a certain way that I wished I hadn’t been guilty of. We can often react too quickly and express our opinions in ways we don’t realize. But it doesn’t always have to be a bad thing! I’ve heard it takes more muscles to frown than it does to smile, hard to believe, but I don’t mind cheesing when I am in a great mood.

There are many types of body language and non verbal communication. The two groups include: facial expressions, body movements, posture, gestures, eye contact, touch, space and voice. Facial expressions are a dead give a way to the emotions an individual is feeling. The pitch and tone of someone’s voice can also distinguish personal feeling. If someone is yelling and has a loud, harsh tone we understand them to be angry.

So what’s important about our body language and non verbal communication? Everything! If you can read an individual’s body language you know how to react more appropriately to what they say and do. For instance, if you witness someone with puffy red eyes and a cracking voice you can read their body language and know that they are upset. By understanding their non verbal communication you can communicate more sympathetically with them verses running up to them like everything is okay. When intercepted correctly, body language and non verbals allow us to communicate more effectively. You can better determine when to approach your boss with a raise, when to help your friend with a bad break up, or even know when someone is upset and happy.

Understanding the way individuals communicate through non verbals and body language is a powerful tool. It provides insight to what people won’t verbally say. By utilizing this concept we will be able to understand one another and work together better. Now that you’re thinking about your own body language and how others perceive you, pay attention to what you’re really doing. Take a second to actually think about those faces your making and noises of aggravation. One important tool I found designed to analyze your own non verbal techniques is video taping yourself. That way you can see first hand what types of signals you are demonstrating. By watching yourself you can also alter what you do to display more positive and appropriate behavior. Just remember in most situations your first impression is your last impression and you don’t want the first thing someone see’s of you to be a crazy eye or sour face

Hey Allison! I loved reading your blog. I too find it important and helpful when creating a cover letter. I like the example you described about the cover letter essentially being the handshake to introduce yourself. If you think about it, some employers are doing interviews online and through Skype now. If you don’t have the opportunity to shake their hand in the traditional setting, then having a cover letter gives something a little more personal they will remember. Like your blog explains, I also found that it is important to keep your cover letter short and direct. No one wants to get bored reading a 5 page letter Besides who has time to read that much for just one individual! Thanks for the tidbits, it was fun to read!

Hello Candice! I agree with you from the beginning regarding resume writing and fitting everything you’ve done on one page. I always have trouble highlighting the most important things because I feel that all my job experiences are relevant. That’s why I think cover letters are so beneficial, like you said, they allow you to further explain some of the skills you find important when applying for a position. I found your tidbit regarding cover letters demonstrating writing skills and communicating in writing very important, I never thought of that before! For future PR practitioners such as ourselves it is very important that we can utilize our writing abilities and express our talents in a written and verbal way. Thanks for the advice!

http://kbixby1.wordpress.com/

Hi Kristin! I enjoyed your blog. You have provided a lot of great tips for us to watch out for. It is hard to recognize when you do little things that may give away what you’re thinking. This way of communicating is very effective, but it may mean different things to different people. It’s important to realize what kind of actions you portray at all times so that they are no miscommunications.

Allison, I loved your blog!! It literally made me laugh out loud when you told the story of your hair twirling habit. I have a friend who does that. It also reminded me of a scene from high school when my best friend looked at me one day and said “Dang! What kind of face was that?” Apparently I had given someone one of those go somewhere looks and didn’t even realize it. It is very important to recognize what your body does and the types of body language/nonverbals you publicize. I would hate to know that I blew a job interview because of a sour face I made. Thanks for the tidbits, I really enjoyed it!

http://aallmond1.wordpress.com/2010/02/11/social-media-is-a-double-edged-sword/#comment-12

Hello again Allison! You are completely right about social media being a “double-edged sword!” You can definitely maximize your potential if you know how to use social media appropriately. Although until this semester I was not very comfortable in blogging and I did not see the need for it, I have found some interesting tips! The same goes with the other social networking sites such as Twitter and LinkedIn. It is very important for us, job seekers, to use these sites. Social media definitely gives more benefits than the traditional newspaper hunting or driving around all day to see who is hiring. I can’t complain one bit, I much rather sit at my desk in the comfort of my own home to find my dream job and network with those I have met. But like you, I don’t think I have the guts to post a YouTube video on my profile just yet! Thanks for the advice.

#6- February 15, 2010 for Micaela Carter/Body Language and Non-Verbals

http://micaelacarter.wordpress.com/2010/01/28/body-language-in-job-interviews-prca-3711/#comment-15

Hey Micaela! Great blog on nonverbals! I find it very important that you mentioned if girls are wearing a skirt to cross their ankles, not their legs. Sometimes we get so nervous by the interview that we forget what we are doing or what we’re wearing. You definitely don’t want to give your future employer an “eye full” by forgetting something so simple. I also like the part where you said to keep eye contact. I think this is very important. I always look people in the eye when I’m talking to them and find it very helpful to understand their feedback. I think it shows confidence when you have the ability to maintain eye contact and it also shows your interest for the position. A funny tidbit I found was about the overloading on cologne/perfume. Although you may not smell the fragrance on yourself others can and you definitely want to keep it light. I think it was great that you brought up that point because you never know who may have allergies.

# 7- March 10, 2010 for Candice Hall/What to wear to a PR Job Interview

http://candimichelle.wordpress.com/2010/03/04/what-to-wear-to-a-pr-job-interview/#comment-27

Hey Candice! Loved your blog! You are exactly right, we definitely tend to judge people solely on their appearance. That’s why it’s so important to take that extra step when dressing professionally for a job interview. It’s all about your appearance and how you carry yourself. Before you say a word your potential employer has to be impressed with you. It’s funny to think about because I often see people who literally look like they just woke up. Seriously, do you think you could at least brush your hair! Job interviews are not like going to class all day. And let’s not forget to wear deodorant. It’s simple things and common sense that carry people a long way if you just do them!

#8- March 10, 2010 Candice Hall/Twitterville Book Review

http://candimichelle.wordpress.com/2010/03/02/twitterville/#comment-28

Hello again Candice! I know exactly where you’re coming from. Before reading Twitterville I was the same way, I didn’t understand all the fuss and I wasn’t about to create a Twitter account just to read what people were doing during the day. Who really cares? However after reading the book I realize what an impact it has made. It is great for social networking and definitely influences businesses on several different levels. It is a great way to communicate and deliver instantaneous feedback. Who knew?! I can’t imagine what the world will bring twenty years from now. Glad to know I wasn’t the only one who learned a thing or two!

#9- April 10, 2010 Lauren/Interview Project

http://laur22.wordpress.com/2010/03/30/interview-with-a-pr-professional/

Hi Lauren. I think that writing is essential for PR practitioners. Obviously you want to make sure you are well equipped and are a perfectionist when it comes to creating public copies. Especially when dealing with clients. Just think how awful it would be if someone caught a typo on one of your projects! Having a good writing background is also helpful when writing press releases and sending emails. You can cover up certain things when you speak, but when it’s written and typed out that’s a whole new ball park! I enjoyed reading about your interview. The tips were very helpful!

#10- April 10, 2010 Lauren/Dressing for Interviews

http://laur22.wordpress.com/2010/03/02/dressing-for-the-pr-job/

Lauren, I love the part where you say it’s important to be prepared with your “best attitude and personality!” I think we get so caught up in “what to wear” that we forget about being ourselves. It’s so important to show off who you are and let your personality display while being interviewed. Sometimes we may get nervous and focus so hard on looking just right that we overlook the easiest part. Being yourself! Getting hired for a job is all about how you fit with the organization, and how will they know if you will fit if they don’t get a chance to see what you’re all about. Great point!

#11- April 10, 2010 Lauren/Internship

http://laur22.wordpress.com/2010/03/22/internship-advice-for-beginners/

Hello Lauren. Two very important points that I found in your blog were: do your homework and be innovative. I don’t know how many times I’ve heard how important it is to do a little pre-research on the company of your interest. I completely agree. By doing just a little leg work beforehand you can really maximize your potential and even impress your next employer. Being innovative is also important. Not everyone is creative and can think of new opportunities or great ideas. If you have that ability it will distinguish you from the rest of the crowd immediately. Thanks for the advice on Internships!

#12- April 10, 2010 Allison Almond/Career Services Career Fair

http://aallmond1.wordpress.com/2010/04/13/eagle-expo-career -fair/

Allison, you hit the nail on the head! Career Fairs are great, but who really wants to go to one. Better yet, can you say awkward! Like you, I’m not much of a spotlight hog and I tend to cringe at the thought of going to a Career Fair. However, I am very good at the one on one interviewing with employers. Career Fairs always give me the image of buzzards flying around a dead carcass…each one just watching the other, and waiting for someone to make a move. Dramatic I know! (lol) As you can tell, they aren’t my favorite either. Thanks for the tips though, maybe that will help me from hiding in the corner

#13- April 10, 2010 Allison Almond/Interview

Allison, your blogs are always a delight! I love the idea of being an events coordinator. That is a dream profession of mine! Although she did not anticipate the route her career took, it is interesting to know that she was still able to utilize a few things she was taught so that she could market herself and write persuasively to attract more clients. We can always find a way to use little things that can benefit us. It seems as though it has worked out great for her! Sounds like a fun time!

#14- April 10, 2010 Kristin Bixby/ Interview

http://kbixby1.wordpress.com/

Hey Kristin! I really enjoyed your blog and learned a lot of neat things that you had to offer about Allie. She seems to have a lot on her plate and constantly doing something! Parkmobile USA, Inc seems like a great company. I can tell that it will be a success and a great experience for her. The company is creating something very innovative and I think it will really make a big impact. It has become technological savvy with the rest of the world, and that’s very important! You have to be able to reach people’s needs and they are doing that! Thanks for the good information!

#15- April 15, 2010 Marilyn Lintel/Interview

http://marilynpr.wordpress.com/2010/01/26/blog-comments-pr-practicum-3711/

Hi Marilyn, what a great idea! I love that you went against traditional interviewing and were able to find someone younger with experience. It gives me hope that it won’t take our generation years to be successful. I think Carter has a great approach to doing his job, what better way to improve your own facility than to visit other locations and see what you can do differently. I also think the way an interview candidate interacts with the organizations members are key. You can have great skills, but if you don’t mesh with the company you’re out. Businesses are always looking for talented individuals who fit with them the best.

#16- April 15, 2010 Marilyn Lintel/Twitterville

http://marilynpr.wordpress.com/2010/03/03/twitterville-my-experience-when-visiting/

Hello Marilyn! I also did my review on Twitterville. I can honestly say that I was completely amazed. I have never had experience with Twitter and I did not have a clue as to how it operated. It blows me away how popular it has become. I never thought something that instantaneous would be such a hit. I was surprised to learn that Twitter has its very own language. As you explained in your blog there are several abbreviations that create the universal communication for Twitter. It is a very neat process, maybe one day I will find an interest in it!

#17- April 15, 2010 Sheila Cost/Career Services

http://scost1.wordpress.com/2010/04/12/career-services-had-an-event-where/

Career Services really offers many workshops and events for GSU. I’d never realized before this semester how many things actually take place on campus because of their department. They encourage students to participate and attend the events but unfortunately not many people are notified of the events. This semester alone they hosted workshops for interviewing, internships, networking, resume critiques and etc. We are fortunate to have a department on campus that is so eager to help students find success with future employers.

#18- April 15, 2010 Sheila Cost/interview

http://scost1.wordpress.com/2010/03/29/informational-interview/

Hello Sheila! I am also interested in the event planning aspect of Public Relations. I am glad you were able to interview someone who shares your interest so that you could get an idea of what her typical business day entails. A big part of PR is interacting with other people, especially with community members. It’s all about who you know and making a good name for yourself. Especially if you’re in event planning. The more people you know the more people that will call on you to host an event for you.

#19- April 15, 2010 Jessica Cameron/Interview

Hello! I enjoyed reading about your interview experience with Scottie. My favorite part is where she recommended for every PR student to take Pubs. I have not taken publications yet and I am really looking forward to it. I really enjoy creating advertisements, brochures and the creative aspects of business. I think design projects are a lot of fun and offer way more than plain text. I also liked the part about how she graduated GSU with a degree in PR and actually landed a PR position. A management position at that! How great! I hope we are all as fortunate.

Hey there! I have to admit, I caught myself laughing quite a bit while reading this particular blog. The part that I really enjoyed is something I think about and see constantly! The social networking dont’s are very important to notice and adhere to. I can’t explain how many times I see people posting rude remarks and negative comments regarding their job and or employer. Come on people! As advanced as most companies are with social networking and being more technological I don’t understand how people can participate in such behavior. You have just posted something for all the world to see, and yes your employer or future employer just might see it. Keep it clean folks! Thanks for reiterating pertinent information!

http://jcam19.wordpress.com/2010/02/24/what-to-wear-to-a-pr-job-interview/#comment-111

Okay seriously, it’s sad that we must evaluate what some people wear to interviews. They are trying to get a “professional adult job” but end up leaving the house like they are wearing yesterday’s makeup or last night’s stained shirt. Unfortunately, the tips you provided will be a news flash to some! I like the part where you mention not wearing sunglasses. First of all I’ve never understood the need for wearing sunglasses indoors, but secondly I’m pretty sure you’re not going to need them for the interview! I also like the part where you mentioned keeping your fingernails manicured and trimmed. I know a guy who has longer finger nails than I do, and it freaks me out. There’s something about it that is just really sick and I just want to trim his nails for him! Thanks for posting, it was fun to read!

http://allykup123.wordpress.com/2010/04/15/cover-letters-and-resumes-theyre-a-bigger-deal-than-you-may-think/

Hello Ally. I think workshops are a great idea, and definitely benefit us before we graduate and look for our dream job. Cover letters are very important, they help introduce who you are when you are not physically delivering your cover letter and resume. I agree with you when you said give them something that sparks their interests. No one wants to read boring “I” statements. They want to know how you can benefit their organization. Depending on what you put in your cover letter sometimes decides whether your resume will get looked at or not. So keep it interesting! Thanks for the advice.

#23- April 20, 2010 Ally/Internship

http://allykup123.wordpress.com/2010/03/11/need-an-internship-heres-some-words-of-advice/

Great internship advice! Most students are so eager to just find an internship that they never think of all the factors you mentioned in your blog. If you get this image of your dream internship and never do your research of that organization you may change your opinion after working there and feel as though it was a wasted experience. You definitely want to find an internship that fits your personality and personal interests. You also want to make sure that you will fit in with the culture of that organization. Being proactive and doing a little leg work and research beforehand might help to eliminate potential stress.

#24- April 20, 2010 Ally/Dressing for the Interview

http://allykup123.wordpress.com/2010/02/24/what-the-pros-are-wearing-these-days/

Hello Ally. I think I get more nervous about what to wear to an interview, than the actual interview itself. The perfect interview outfit says a lot about you, and you can offer more confidence when you are comfortable in what you’re wearing. I like your advice in picking out your outfit the day before. I have a bad habit of changing what I wear so I like to plan ahead and make sure what I wear is wrinkle and stain free. By planning ahead a day or two, you can also make sure your shoes look nice and clean and still have time to buy anything that needs to be replaced. Thanks for the advice!

#25- April 20, 2010 Ally/Nonverbal Communication

http://allykup123.wordpress.com/2010/01/29/body-language-and-nonverbal-communication/

Great advice for nonverbal communication. For me, facial expressions have to be the most important. Sometimes I catch myself giving the most ridiculous looks to others and I have to remember to control myself. This is very important to be aware of. I also think eye contact is very important. I always look others in the eye when I’m talking to them. I feel as though it shows respect and I want them to know they have my full attention. When I’m having a conversation with someone who is texting, or looking around the room I feel as though they aren’t really apart of the conversation and not paying attention. It’s very important to be aware in what signals you are giving off and the nonverbals you display.

For those of us who are in search of the perfect job, here are a few tips for Cover Letter’s I have found helpful that may help in landing that certain position. The following links can also be used as guidelines to follow in cover letter writing.

First and foremost, be sure to have an objective for your cover letter. Make sure you are qualified for the job and get an idea of why you would be the best candidate for the position. You want to be direct and have knowledge on the company you are seeking a job with. Be interesting and explain what makes you different from the others applying for the same job. Always make sure your cover letter is personal. Although you want to be thorough don’t allow your letter to become too lengthy. Normally a few good paragraphs are sufficient. Many employers have 50 plus resumes and cover letters to look at, you don’t want to bore them by having an autobiography and giving away too many details. Have enough information to cover all the important questions but also leave some topics to be discussed for an interview.

http://www.worktree.com/tb/CL_tips.cfm

A cover letter is important because it is your introduction. You want your introduction to be positive and interesting. Find a way to distinguish yourself from all the other applicants. Think of what makes you different and helps you stand away from the crowd. The purpose of a cover letter is to address who you are and what you are seeking, normally an interview for a position within the organization. After a brief explanation you may want to include a few questions that are normally answered. A few important questions to answer within the cover letter include: the position you are applying for, how you learned of the position/company, why you are the perfect candidate, and who will contact who.

http://www.accent-resume-writing.com/covertips/

In your cover letter be sure to express your enthusiasm for the job. Not only explain how you will suit the position but why the job is important to you. How will you make the difference? Identify experiences, achievements and skills that apply to the position you seek. Although your resume will outline your work experience, in your cover letter you want to relate your skills to the position at hand and explain how you will satisfy those skills. Always be sure to use simple language, avoid cliches, jargon and abbreviations. You should also make a firm habit to proofread your document and process the letter through spell check to catch any mistakes you may have overlooked. It is also a good suggestion to allow your friends or previous co-workers to read your cover letter and resume, they may be able to help define strengths you overlooked.

http://jobsearch.about.com/cs/coverletters/ht/coverletter.htm

Things to avoid in your cover letter include, why you are leaving the company you are currently with, salary information, do not use your cover letter as a summary for your resume, do not lie in your cover letter and always avoid using negative language.
